The most idyllic place Zoo/Flora can imagine is the rancid toilet in the bar next door. Yes, the Cologne band loves beauty in filth, thrives on an aesthetic between coarseness and romance: rock star sunglasses are mixed with wedding dresses; lipstick is applied but smeared. This sets Zoo/Flora apart from many acts of the so-called New New German Wave. Although they follow in its footsteps with their cheeky, catchy punk/pop mix and are reminiscent of New Wave legends of the 1980s, they ultimately come across as different: heartfelt, yet chaotic—emotionally charged and yet full of drive.
