Concerts & Parties during Design Week Cologne

From 18 – 23 January 2010 c/o pop is presenting its second Cologne Music Week the same week as the IMM Cologne - international furniture fair and PASSAGEN – Interior Design Week Cologne with a cultural diverse program. Amidst the bustle of 190 international designers exhibiting their work in the galleries, showrooms and furniture shops of the city centre, c/o pop will provide some unmissable concerts, parties and live acts.

Things kick off on Monday with Munich’s SCHLACHTHOFBRONX – not just a tongue-twister for English-speaking hipster blogs, but three Germans who produce a crazy and unashamed mixture of African, South American and Caribbean beats stirred up with bass music of every kind and then brazenly paired with Balkan brass and Bavarian folk music.

As in 2009, the music network Sound of Cologne is hosting small concerts by promising local bands every evening (Mon – Fri) in the Statdgarten restaurant. Entrance is free. Artists include the enchanting JEANNEL and the c/o pop-seasoned LINGBY and VA BANQUE. On Thursday the newcomer contest popUP NRW presents its four finalists: PRISCA JONES, MIAOMIO, CAPTAIN COSMOS and MODE EEXCUTE READY. The Cologne connection is completed by JOHANNES STANKOWSKI and WOLKE at »Lagerfeuer Deluxe« on Friday evening in Studio 672.

The atmosphere will be similarly intimate but much clubbier on Thursday night as Cologne welcomes two top acts from the Hamburg-based label Dial. PAWEL is celebrating the release of his eponymous album with one of his magic live appearances in Studio 672, accompanied by the young American JOHN ROBERTS, recently described by Resident Advisor as “one of deep house's most exciting new talents”, also live. The DJ? Christian S. Who else?

Three parties associated with the c/o pop club night »Local Heroes« also promise to be good (LIKE in Subway with RAMPA, SMILE in Gloria with MAREK HEMMANN and SILBERSCHWEIN and BEAT DOWN BABYLON in Stadtgarten & Studio 672), then things really heat up on Saturday night when the biggest club culture magazine in Germany, GROOVE, celebrates its 20th birthday with HORSE MEAT DISCO (London), JUSTUS KÖHNCKE (live), AGORIA, PANTHA DU PRINCE (live, new album due out any day now on RTD) and TOBIAS THOMAS. (Venue: Stadtgarten hall and restaurant).

And while you’re in town, we warmly recommend the official Cologne Music Week meet & greet bar right by Westbahnhof, which will reopen on Wednesday 20 January with a new name and a new concept. From Thursday to Saturday the bar will also play host to some small but talented electronic acts (tbc).
